Dehradun: Effective July 1, the Uttarakhand Madrassa Board will be replaced by the newly formed Uttarakhand State Minority Education Authority. This transition will bring the state’s madrassas under the formal recognition framework of the state education board. The overhaul stems from the Uttarakhand Minority Education Act, 2025, which was notified by the minority welfare department in October last year to enhance academic standards across minority educational institutions.Established in 2011, the original Madrassa Board lacked official recognition from the state education board, creating a roadblock for students entering the mainstream workforce. Earlier, traditional certificates like Maulvi, Alim and Munshi were not recognised for govt employment—a gap this new system aims to fix to improve academic and professional avenues for the state’s estimated 50,000 madrassa students.Under the fresh guidelines, nearly 400 madrassas operating from Classes 1 to 8 will be granted recognition at the district level. Also, 52 institutions offering Classes 9 to 12 must secure formal recognition from the Vidyalaya Shiksha Parishad in Ramnagar.Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized that the new authority will feature a diverse lineup, including members from various communities alongside govt officials serving as ex-officio members.“We want to provide quality education to all students and no one should be deprived of good teachers and education. This move will definitely help the students,” Dhami said.
