State govt to implement Holistic Progress Card for Class IX students

Ahmedabad: The state govt has decided to introduce a major reform in the education system by implementing the Holistic Progress Card (HPC) for Class IX students from the academic year 2026-27.

Based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this new system aims to move beyond marks and ranks and focus on a comprehensive 360-degree evaluation of students. In the first phase, the education board will launch a pilot project in 10% of schools across each district, including govt, grant-in-aid and private institutions. The selected schools will implement the HPC for Class IX students, and based on the outcomes and feedback, the system will later be expanded state-wide.Developed by PARAKH under NCERT, the Holistic Progress Card introduces a modern and scientific approach to assessment. Unlike the traditional system that relies heavily on year-end written exams, it evaluates students on multiple aspects of their development. It includes participation from teachers, students (self-assessment), peers and parents, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of a student's academic, social and emotional growth.

The HPC will be divided into several sections. Section A focuses on self-assessment, covering personal details, time management, life skills and achievements. Section B emphasises group projects to build teamwork and leadership qualities. Section C includes problem-based learning, where students identify real-life issues and work on solutions. Section D records teacher observations of classroom behaviour, while Section E tracks online learning and courses undertaken by students.

Section F documents the total hours spent on projects and activities, reflecting student engagement. The education board stated that HPC will create a continuous record of each student's progress, making it a crucial document for their overall development and future learning journey.
