Improving nutrition and hygiene standards at the grassroots level as the objective, the Telangana Tribal Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society and Eklavya Model Residential Schools on Wednesday conducted an upskilling workshop for nearly a thousand cooks and kitchen staff in all its hostels.

Guided by a multi-disciplinary team of food safety officers, public health experts, and master chefs, the State-wide workshop was conducted in all districts and the hands-on training included safe food storage and handling methods and personal and kitchen hygiene practices.

A retired Food Safety Licensing Officer Vijayakumar led the virtual sessions from here, and explained the kitchen staff about preparing balanced and culturally relevant nutritious meals and use of seasonal and local ingredients to ensure sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

According to TTWREIS Secretary K. Seetha Lakshmi, in addition to education as the core focus, nutrition and hygiene are inseparable for a child’s holistic development. The workshop was a step toward strengthening that ecosystem, she said.
