Chaos erupted on the Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas cruise ship when an acrylic water slide broke open mid-ride, leaving one passenger injured.
The incident took place earlier this week on Thursday, when a section of the tallest water slide, located at the high-altitude Thrill Island attraction, suddenly broke while a guest was riding through its enclosed loop.
The video of the incident is doing the rounds on social media platforms, showing the terrified passengers screaming “Stop the slide!" as water was seen cascading onto the deck below.
Several people can be heard shouting, “Stop the slide. Stop the slide," as the incident unfolded.
Royal Caribbean Group confirmed the mishap and said that the injured guest was provided medical care.
“Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide. The guest is being treated for his injuries," the group said in a statement as reported by CNN.
The injured guest, whose identity has not been released, is reported to be in stable condition.
The affected slide has been shut down for the rest of the voyage as the cruise line launches a full investigation into the incident.
The incident came amid growing scrutiny of cruise ship safety. In July, the Icon of the Seas faced two separate mishaps. A guest fell over the side of the ship’s infinity pool while retrieving sunglasses and a crew member died after allegedly jumping overboard following a violent altercation.
According to Royal Caribbean’s website, Icon of the Seas has six waterslides in a waterpark called Category 6, which it says is the “largest waterpark at sea." The park is located on decks 16 and 17 of the behemoth ship, which is currently the world’s largest cruise ship in operation.
The cruise departed Miami on August 2 and is scheduled to return to port on Saturday after a tour of the Caribbean. It embarked on its maiden voyage in January 2024. The ship can carry nearly 10,000 people at full capacity.
