Amid the ongoing regional tensions and fluctuating situations, numerous tourists have been left stranded in the Gulf due to flight disruptions and cancellations. But while you are stuck in a foreign land, what rights do you possess to exercise? The extent of the facilities and rights you enjoy in the UAE is defined by the General Civil Aviation Authority's Passenger Welfare Programme, the UAE Commercial Transactions Law and the Montreal Convention. Here are some facilities you are entitled to and how you can secure them while your stay in the UAE is extended for an unknown time ahead:
Meals, communications, and hotel stays
Once delays cross a certain time threshold, passengers can claim basic support such as:
- After 2 hours: meals and refreshments
- After 3 hours: access to calls or emails
- After 6+ hours or overnight: hotel stay and transport
This applies even if the delay is not in the airline's control. Passengers must ask for vouchers or assistance at the airport.
Free rebooking or full refund
If your flight gets cancelled you are entitled to two options:
- You can rebook the next available flight
- Or ask for a full refund
Passengers can also choose to accept vouchers, if preferred.
Ensure quick decisions and use online tools to secure alternatives swiftly.
Compensation depends on the situation
Compensation depends on the cause of the disruptions. If there is an airline-related issue you may be eligible for them. However, if the delay or cancellation was caused by airspace closures, conflict, or security risks then compensation is typically not available. The current situation falls in the second category and thus numerous airlines have offered passengers free cancellations or easy rebookings.
Facilities in case of delays
There are some facilities you can still use, in case of delays or disruption, depending on the situation. Passengers can ask for:
- Meals during long delays
- Hotel stays if delays last overnight
- Transport between the airport and the accommodation
Ensure to keep all receipts in hand and submit claims under the delay or disruption categories.
Under the Montreal Convention
As per the Montreal Convention of 1999, which governs airline liability for international carriage of people, baggage or cargo, you can:
- Claim for proven financial losses caused by delays
- These include additional expenses you can document with receipts
When stuck in a region battling geopolitical tensions, it is important to stay in contact with the airline representatives and keep monitoring official updates on verified channels before making decisions.
