Strasbourg defeated Monaco 3-1 at home in the French Cup on Thursday, ending Monaco’s brief resurgence.
Martial Godo gave Strasbourg an early lead with a header in the seventh minute. Diego Moreira dribbled down the right wing and chipped the ball to the far post, where Thilo Kehrer headed it back into the six-yard box for Godo to dive and score.
Julio Enciso initiated a series of goals by doubling Strasbourg’s lead in the 55th minute. He beat the offside trap, rounded goalkeeper Philipp Koehn, and slotted the ball into the net.
Monaco’s Mika Biereth responded just seconds after the restart, guiding his shot inside the far post.
In the following three minutes, Enciso had a shot blocked, chipped a ball over the bar, and then scored his second goal by pouncing on a loose ball to beat the diving Koehn.
Monaco, who had recently recovered from a slump by advancing to the Champions League knockout play-offs and defeating Rennes 4-0 in Ligue 1, suffered another setback with this loss.
Gary O’Neil won for the fourth time in five games since taking over as Strasbourg coach after Liam Rosenior moved to Chelsea.
The match was played against a backdrop of fan discontent. Visiting Monaco fans displayed a banner reading “management resign." Shortly before kick-off, Strasbourg fan groups published an open letter to French football governing bodies and the French Minister of Sport, criticising their team’s “subservience" to Chelsea, which is part of BlueCo, the owner of both clubs.
In the quarter-finals scheduled for early March, Strasbourg will face Reims, the only second-division club left in the competition.
The highlight of Thursday’s draw is a match between Lyon, unbeaten in 11 games following their victory over Laval in the round of 16 on Wednesday, and Lens, currently second in Ligue 1.
In the other ties, Marseille will host Toulouse, and Lorient will entertain Nice.
