The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) on December 16 launched a stray dog adoption initiative, with several animal lovers coming forward to adopt healthy dogs and puppies.
The event, organised at Town Hall, was attended by representatives of some non-governmental organisations, including People For Animals (PFA), along with dog lovers and animal welfare activists. Senior MCC officials were also present. The initiative was launched with the support of PFA and the Animal Husbandry Department.
Taking the lead in addressing concerns related to the growing street dog population, the MCC said that adoption is the most effective and humane solution. The civic body stressed the need to create greater awareness so that more families come forward to adopt sterilised and vaccinated adult street dogs, as well as healthy and vaccinated puppies.
MCC Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif said that stray dogs are resilient, intelligent, and capable of becoming an integral part of families by offering companionship and security. “They are affectionate and pleasing animals,” he said.
Explaining the potential impact of the initiative, the Commissioner noted that according to the 2011 Census, Mysuru city has around two lakh houses within MCC limits and a population of about 10 lakh. “If the estimated street dog population of around 50,000 is considered, and if just one in four households adopts a street dog by providing food and shelter, the issue of street dogs can be addressed,” he said.
Emphasising both active and passive adoption, Mr. Asif said the MCC operates a dedicated facility for street dogs at Rayankere, which citizens can support through passive adoption. He also encouraged families to opt for active adoption by directly taking dogs into their homes. “Adoption is not only humane but also a social cause,” the Commissioner added.
MCC Health Officer Dr. Venkatesh, Savita Nagabhushan of PFA, Assistant Director of Animal Husbandry Dr. Poornada, retired Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Dr. Tirumalesh, retired veterinary doctor Dr. Suresh, and others were present.
