Two men in Bahraich district have alleged they were abducted and assaulted by a group of men, reportedly in revenge for a previous complaint they had filed related to an alleged religious conversion case.

The incident occurred on July 23 and came to official attention after one of the victims, Chandan Maurya, filed a complaint at Ramgaon police station.

According to his account, he, along with his cousin Mohit and a friend named Annu, was on the way to a birthday event when they were allegedly stopped by Shahabuddin and two others from Mehari Baikha village, reported India Today.

Two more individuals, identified as Anas and Zeeshan, reportedly joined later. Chandan and Mohit were forcibly taken in a vehicle to a remote area and assaulted.

Chandan has alleged that they were stripped, beaten with rods and sticks, deprived of water, and forced to consume urine. He further claimed that they were threatened at gunpoint and made to chant religious slogans.

Police have so far arrested three accused — Shahabuddin, Anas, and Zeeshan — and recovered the vehicle allegedly used in the incident.

Additional Superintendent of Police Durga Prasad Tiwari said the initial investigation suggests a personal dispute may have triggered the assault. “We’ve registered an FIR, rescued the victims, and are verifying all aspects of the case," he said.

On the allegations regarding religious slogans, Tiwari noted that these claims were not included in the initial police complaint. “These are now being examined as part of the extended investigation. So far, no supporting evidence has been found," he said.

Chandan also alleged that the accused were part of an online group operating under fake Hindu identities, which allegedly targeted Hindu women through social media platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram.

He claimed the group showed off luxury items to lure individuals and accused the police of inaction when he first reported the matter two months ago.

“Instead of taking action, they deleted the data from my phone and pushed for a compromise," he alleged.

Police say those additional claims are being reviewed. “We are probing all new leads and verifying the authenticity of the information," ASP Tiwari said, adding that the investigation remains ongoing.
