Strong Dusty Winds Sweep Delhi As IMD Issues Red Alert For Thunderstorms, Rain

The weatherman has sounded a 'yellow alert' for the capital, warning of light rainfall and thunderstorms, with wind speed expected to hover around 40-50 kmph

The national capital witnessed rain showers, dust storms, and strong winds on Tuesday evening, providing much-needed relief to residents from the prevailing heatwave and soaring temperatures.

The weatherman has sounded red and orange alerts for the capital, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, hail and moderate rain in various parts of the city, with wind speed expected to hover around 50-70 kmph.

The maximum temperature in Delhi is likely to revolve around 38-42 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to remain in the range of 29-30 degrees Celsius.

“Light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning (50-80 Km/h gusty winds) is very likely to occur at most places of Delhi & NCR. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning", according to a statement by the RWFC, New Delhi.

Parts of Haryana — Kaithal, Narwana, Fatehabad, Rajaund, Assandh, Safidon, Barwala, Jind, Panipat, Adampur, Hissar, Gohana, Gannaur, Hansi, Siwani, Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Sohana, Rewari, Palwal, Narnaul, Bawal, Nuh, Aurangabad, Hodal, Tosham — will also experience light rainfall and thunderstorms, said the weather body.

The change in weather comes as the residents of New Delhi continue to endure soaring temperatures, even as southwest monsoon has officially entered India and advanced across several parts of the country.

When Will Monsoon Enter Delhi?

Although southwest monsoon has made subtle progress towards southern, central and parts of eastern India, it remains far away from the national capital.

The monsoon typically reaches Delhi and lasts until mid-September. However, the date may vary depending upon atmospheric conditions.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is likely to make landfall in Delhi between June 25 and 30. Neighbouring cities like Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad are also expected to receive the rain showers towards the end of June.

The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, three days later than its usual arrival date. The MeT department said the delay in monsoon was driven by a developing El Nino pattern in the Pacific Ocean.
