Student driving car after school farewell runs over 6 in Lucknow, 6-year-old child dies
A tragic road accident was reported in Lucknow’s Banthra area on Thursday evening after a speeding car allegedly driven by a Class 12 student returning from a school farewell hit an auto-rickshaw and pedestrians, leaving five injured and a six-year-old boy dead, police said.
The incident took place around 6 pm near the Hanuman Temple on Kanpur Road. Preliminary information suggests the student was driving a Maruti Swift with his girlfriend when the accident occurred.
Sources said the car rammed into an auto-rickshaw and struck pedestrians walking along the roadside. After the crash, the student allegedly dropped the girl at another location and fled.
Police traced the vehicle based on information provided by the girl and recovered the Swift car. The driver, however, remains absconding.
Police said the injured have been identified as Armaan (12), Avadh Bihari (42), Sadhana Verma (35), Meena Devi (60) and Dikshant Patel (6). All were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Dikshant’s condition was reported critical and he was referred to a higher medical facility, but he later succumbed during treatment.
“The child was referred due to his serious condition, but he died during treatment,” police said, adding that panchanama proceedings are underway.
Victims’ families have been informed, and police teams remain deployed at the spot. Further investigation is ongoing to trace the accused and determine the circumstances leading to the accident.
