Sudan Landslide Kills Over 1,000, Wipes Out Darfur Village | Video

An armed group in western Sudan has appealed for international assistance after a devastating landslide, triggered by torrential rain, buried Tarseen village in the mountainous Jebel Marra area of the Darfur region.

According to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), which controls the area, at least 1,000 people are feared dead, with only one known survivor.

“Tarseen, famed for its citrus production, has now been completely levelled to the ground," the group said in a statement, according to news agency Reuters.

The group urged the United Nations and aid agencies to help recover bodies and rescue stranded villagers. Ongoing heavy rains have made access to the area difficult, with the final 45 km to the village only reachable on foot or by donkey, according to development group Plan International.

The UN’s resident coordinator estimated the death toll at between 300 and 1,000, based on local reports. Nine bodies have so far been recovered by volunteers, said Abdelhafiz Ali from the Jebel Marra Emergency Room, noting that many displaced people had been sheltering in Tarseen, Reuters reported.
