Sunderland completed the derby double at St James’ Park as Brian Brobbey struck a dramatic 90th-minute winner against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Chemsdine Talbi had earlier cancelled out Anthony Gordon’s opener on Tyneside, but it was Brobbey who emerged the hero.

The Tyne-Wear derby was halted briefly after abuse from the crowd, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.

“This is in line with the Premier League’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all," the Premier League said in a statement.

Regis Le Bris was forced into one change for the game, with the injured Dan Ballard dropping out of the starting XI and Luke O’Nien coming in.

Newcastle created the first clear chance when Anthony Elanga powered a header over the bar from Lewis Hall’s cross.

The hosts took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes, capitalising on a loose pass before Gordon drilled a low finish into the bottom-left corner.

Sunderland responded, and Talbi forced Aaron Ramsdale into action with a curling effort that the goalkeeper tipped over the bar.

Just after the half-hour, Elanga broke in behind the Sunderland defence but could only fire into the side netting.

As half-time approached, Sven Botman met a cross into the box and headed against the outside of the post, ensuring Newcastle went into the interval with a 1-0 lead.

Chris Rigg registered Sunderland’s first effort of the second half, stinging Ramsdale’s palms at his near post.

From the resulting corner, Sunderland found their equaliser. Granit Xhaka’s delivery was palmed away, Trai Hume returned the ball into the six-yard box, and after a scramble it fell to Talbi, who drove a low shot into the net.

Buoyed by the goal, Sunderland pushed on. Xhaka went close to a second when his long-range strike deflected onto the top of Ramsdale’s goal, while Noah Sadiki’s first-time effort inside the box was also pushed away.

Substitute Malick Thiaw headed in from a corner, but his effort was ruled out for a foul by Jacob Murphy. Soon after, Gordon curled a chance for his second over the bar.

Brobbey was then denied by a sliding challenge from Thiaw inside the box, before Talbi fired wide from distance.

In the closing stages, Sunderland produced a moment for the history books. Enzo Le Fée hooked the ball across the face of goal, and Brobbey slammed it home in the 90th minute to give Sunderland the lead.

Le Bris’ side secured another famous win over the Magpies and departed with the derby bragging rights once more.
