Panaji: After five consecutive days of torrential rain, parts of Goa found respite as the sun broke through the clouds on Thursday. Most of the state witnessed clear skies and bright sunshine, a welcome change following heavy rainfall since Aug 17.The spell of intense rainfall was triggered by a surge in the southwest monsoon, which had turned ‘vigorous’. According to the India meteorological department (IMD), Goa recorded 105mm of rain in just 24 hours up to 8.30am on Aug 18. This was followed by 78.3mm on Aug 19, 63.5mm on Aug 20, and 22mm on Aug 21.With the monsoon now returning to a ‘normal’ phase over Goa, light to moderate rainfall has replaced the earlier downpours. These conditions are likely to prevail till Aug 24, as per the IMD forecast. However, the relief may be short-lived. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the state from Aug 25-27, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy showers during this period.Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions in the days ahead.
