The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a CBI investigation into allegations of custodial torture of a Jammu and Kashmir police constable at the Joint Interrogation Centre in Kupwara. The top court also directed the J&K administration to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the constable.

The court has also sought a status report of the investigation by September.

The petitioner has alleged that he was brutally tortured and mutilated while in custody at the Kupwara interrogation facility. The petition sought registration of an FIR against those responsible and had sought an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or the CBI.

The petitioner also demanded the quashing of an FIR lodged at Kupwara police station under Section 309 of the IPC.
