Surat Set to Get Textile R&D Centre as FOSTTA, VNSGU and GTU Join Hands

Surat: If all goes well, the textile and diamond city of Surat will soon have a state-of-the-art research and development centre for the textile industry. The Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA), Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) and the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) have joined hands for setting R&D centre for the textile sector in Surat.

A meeting in this connection was held between the leaders of FOSTTA with the VNSGU vice-chancellor Kishoresinh Chavda and GTU university vice-chancellor Dr. Rahul Gajjar. It was discussed that on the lines of  Research and Development Center being developed for the automobile sector in Ahmedabad, similarly, the academic, technical and other support of both universities is essential for developing a Research and Development Center for the textile industry in Surat. The Vice Chancellors of both the universities assured that all efforts will be made to promote startups in Surat besides developing educational facilities based on the textile industry.

The Vice Chancellors of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) and Gujarat Technological University (GTU) are planning to hold a special meeting with Gen-Z young entrepreneurs in the near future. The meeting will discuss in detail the current challenges facing the textile trade and their solutions. Various aspects of taking Surat’s textile industry forward through modern technology and innovation will also be discussed.

FOSTA President Kailash Hakim said that new technology in the textile sector will promote startups and modern production systems, which will make Surat’s textile industry stronger and more competitive.

GTU Vice Chancellor Dr. Rajul Gajjar said that the university currently has about 840 startups operating, and this number is expected to increase further in the future. They can help the youth to follow their new ideas, start ventures and find new paths for themselves.

VNSGU Vice Chancellor Dr. Kishoresinh Chavda said that a special building (for innovation and research) has been built in the university campus, where students and industrialists associated with the textile sector will be welcome to develop any new initiative, research work or facility. He assured that the university will fully support all such efforts and will actively help in the development of the textile industry in the best possible way.

Dinesh Kataria, General Secretary, FOSTA, while expressing his views, said that as per the suggestion of GTU Vice Chancellor Dr. Rajul Gajjar, just as a Centre of Excellence and R&D Centre for the automobile sector has been established in Ahmedabad in the auto cluster, similarly a modern R&D centre related to textiles should be established in Surat, which can be developed in collaboration with the university. He said that if all the faculties of the university and the textile industry work together and provide technical training to the new generation of textile traders, Surat can become a strong global hub for the textile industry and can also challenge major competitors like China. Moreover, if Surat moves ahead with technology, significant progress is possible in the garment sector and basic textile products.
