Suvansh Dhar on playing a gay character in Campus Beats 6: I just wanted to keep it honest

Suvansh Dhar has been receiving a positive response for his portrayal of Maan, a gay character, in Campus Beats 6. Many viewers feel the performance is understated and authentic, appreciating the way the show approaches the subject with sensitivity rather than dramatising it for effect.Talking about his preparation, Suvansh shares that he approached the role through a mix of observation and collaboration. He says, “I watched films that explore same-sex relationships, and the team of Campus Beats 6 helped me a lot during readings and workshops. So, all the credit goes to my directors, Palki Malhotra ma’am, Mansuri Danish sir, and Aniruddha Rajderkar sir.”When it came to responsibility, Suvansh chose to keep his approach simple, focusing on honesty rather than overthinking the portrayal.

He says, “The responsibility was to depict the emotions of the community as honestly as possible, and I did that without hesitation.”Suvansh also believes that shows like Campus Beats 6 are gradually reshaping how LGBTQ+ stories are represented on Indian screens. Instead of positioning such characters as “different,” the narrative treats them as individuals with relatable emotions and journeys. He explains, “Shows like Campus Beats 6 are helping break stereotypes around LGBTQ+ representation because the way they portray the community’s struggles and inner emotions is important.

”According to him, the most impactful aspect is that the characters are written beyond stereotypes. They are presented as people first, allowing audiences to connect more naturally with their stories. “They’ve portrayed the characters not as stereotypes, but as normal people who happen to love someone of the same gender,” he concludes.
