West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday announced plans to install a statue of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee in Kolkata and convert his ancestral house into a memorial.

The announcement was made during celebrations marking Paschim Banga Divas, where Chief Minister Adhikari also reflected on the state’s historical decision to remain a part of India.

“We have decided to convert Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s ancestral house into a memorial, and a statue of him will be installed in Kolkata," Adhikari said. The event was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Today marks the day when 58 legislators voted in favour of West Bengal becoming a part of India. We are happy that the Prime Minister is here. Koti koti pranam to the Prime Minister," the CM said.

CM Adhikari said special initiatives would be undertaken on July 6, the birth anniversary of Mookerjee, who was a prominent nationalist leader and educationist besides being the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder.

The proposed memorial and statue are expected to form part of the commemorative events planned around Mookerjee’s birth anniversary. Further details regarding the location of the statue and the timeline for the memorial project are yet to be announced.
