Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw not to reduce the number of general coaches in favour of increasing air-conditioned (AC) coaches in trains, and not to proceed with the proposed railway fare hike.

Mr. Stalin, who left by train to Katpadi from Chennai Central on Wednesday morning to attend official functions in Vellore and Tirupattur districts, said on X that he had interacted with the public at the railway station. “The usual joy and enthusiasm among them was lacking due to the proposed hike in fares and the reduced availability of general class coaches,” he said.

“The Railways is not merely a mode of transport for the poor and middle class. It is an integral part of their daily lives. I urge Mr. Modi and Mr. Vaishnaw not to increase fares or reduce the number of general coaches. People from middle-class families are already suffering from financial strain due to inflation and increasing LPG prices. Don’t increase their burden. The Indian Railway isn’t just a service – it’s family!”
