The State government notified the Tamil Nadu Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2025 that would supersede the rules issued in 2000.

According to the rules, information of births and deaths should be given in the specified format and not have abbreviations. The rules also mention that the Tahsildar can permit the registration of birth or death in a village panchayat, if it was informed more than 30 days of its occurrence but within a year. Earlier, permission had to be sought from the Village Panchayat President in this regard.

The rules say that the dates should be in the format of dd-mm-yyyy where dd is the date in two digits, mm is the month in two digits and yyyy is the year in four digits. Issuing registration certificates can be done in electronic format as well.
