A 28-year-old man of Indian origin has been charged with first-degree murder in the United States after allegedly beating his 67-year-old father to death with a sledgehammer at their home in Schaumburg, Illinois. Abhijit Patel, accused of the Thanksgiving weekend murder, had an active protection order against him from his family but was still living at home at the time of the incident, according to US media reports.

Cook County prosecutors stated that the victim, Anupam Patel, was discovered unresponsive and bleeding from the head in his bedroom by his wife shortly before 11 am on November 29.

On the day of the murder, Anupam Patel’s wife left for work at around 5:42 am, leaving her husband and son alone at home. Anupam Patel, who was unemployed due to diabetes, had a glucose monitor connected to his wife’s phone.

Anupam Patel usually used to call his wife at around 8 am to inform her of his blood sugar level, which he failed to do on the day of the incident. Seeing that her husband’s glucose levels were dropping, she grew worried but was unsuccessful in reaching him or their son by phone.

Concerned by the absence of her husband’s usual 8 am check-in call and his dropping glucose levels, she returned home around 10:30 am, only to discover her husband lying in bed, covered in blood.

She found the garage door unusually open and her son saying he had “taken care of Dad" and she “should go check on him."

Emergency responders arrived shortly after her call thereafter and pronounced Anupam Patel dead. They found a sledgehammer at the scene.

Anupam Patel had suffered at least two blows to the head, fracturing his skull and breaking his nose, the autopsy report revealed.

The accused Abhijit Patel surrendered to the police upon their arrival. During questioning, he claimed he had a “religious obligation" to kill his father due to alleged childhood molestation.

He also admitted he was under medical treatment, and his doctors believe his claims are “delusional."

Records show Patel has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was previously hospitalised for treatment.
