Tamil Nadu election 2026: Sankarankovil constituency lacks sufficient basic infrastructure facilities

Sankarankovil (Reserve) constituency, comprising the holy town of Sankarankovil, is a segment which is waiting for decades for better roads, sufficient and good drinking water supply among other basic infrastructure facilities.

Even though Sankarankovil has been represented by Ministers S. Thangavelu of DMK and C. Karuppasamy and V.M. Rajalakshmi of AIADMK, this small town is in pathetic shape even today with cramped roads, poor supply of drinking water etc. Of this, Karuppasamy won the elections in 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011. Even when AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa suffered an agonizing defeat in Bargur in 1996 even as the party lost power to the DMK, Karuppasamy got elected from Sankarankovil. He repeated the same feat in 2006 also when the DMK returned to power.
