Uthangarai (Reserved) constituency, which was formed after the 2008 Delimitation process, has shaped the constituency into an AIADMK stronghold, with the AIADMK wresting the seat from the first elections in 2011 onwards. The party has won for three consecutive terms.

This election, Uthangarai is heading to a two-cornered contest, with the AIADMK returning to the fray with its incumbent MLA T.M. Tamilselvam, who defeated the Congress by 28,387 votes.
