A 10-year-old girl suffered severe facial injuries after a firecracker exploded on her face during a funeral procession in Neelankarai on Friday. The victim, Nishanthini, a Class 6 student from a school in Vettuvankanni, was returning home when the incident occurred.
According to sources, members of the funeral procession were bursting high-decibel crackers on the road. One such firecracker reportedly landed on Nishanthini’s face and exploded, causing serious injuries. Onlookers immediately rushed her to a nearby private hospital, from where she was later shifted to Royapettah Government Hospital for advanced treatment.
The blast severely damaged the left side of her face, affecting her cheek, nose, and eye. Following a complaint filed by her father, Neelankarai Police registered a case and arrested 33-year-old Gopinath. Authorities are also on the lookout for 24-year-old Vineeth, who, along with Gopinath, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol while bursting crackers.
Further investigation is underway.
