A government school headmistress in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district has been suspended after a video of her dancing to a song from actor-politician Vijay’s film at a Women’s Day event went viral on social media.
The suspended official has been identified as Krishnaveni, 58, who was serving as the headmistress of a panchayat union elementary school at Sankaranatharkudikadu and was also in charge of another school in Vellathevanviduthi.
According to reports, the incident took place on March 8 during an International Women’s Day programme organised near Orathanadu by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the political party led by actor Vijay. During the event, Krishnaveni was seen dancing on stage to ‘Kodambakkam Area’, a song from Vijay’s 2005 film Sivakasi.
Videos of the performance were reportedly recorded by attendees and later circulated widely online. After the clip drew attention on social media for more than two weeks, it eventually came to the notice of the school education department.
Officials said disciplinary action was taken on the grounds that, as a government employee, participating in a political party-linked event and dancing on stage amounted to a violation of the Tamil Nadu Government Servants’ Conduct Rules, 1973.
Following an inquiry, the district primary education officer of Pattukkottai educational district, V Mathiyazhagan, ordered her suspension.
