Capable of carrying the BrahMos ship-to-ship missile, the Taragiri warship is all set to be commissioned into the Indian Navy on March 14.

Built for stealth and symbolic of India’s atmanirbharta, Taragiri will significantly bolster the navy’s maritime strike capabilities and territorial defence.

The advanced stealth frigate represents the fourth ship of the sophisticated Nilgiri class developed under Project 17A. Constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) in Mumbai, it was delivered to the navy on November 28, 2025, marking a milestone in India’s indigenous warship design and construction.

WHAT ARE ITS FEATURES?

As a versatile multi-mission platform, the Taragiri is designed to address both contemporary and future challenges within the increasingly contested maritime domain.

Here’s all you need to know:

  • Taragiri is equipped with a potent and sophisticated suite of weaponry and sensors, most notably being capable of carrying the BrahMos ship-to-ship missile system.
  • The frigate’s combat suite includes the MFSTAR (Multi-Function Search and Track Alert Radar) and MRSAM (Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile) complex, a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM), and a strategic combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm close-in weapon systems.
  • For sub-surface threats, it is outfitted with advanced anti-submarine warfare technology, including specialised rockets and torpedoes.
  • This hardware represents a “generational leap" in combat capability, offering a major upgrade over the previous Project 17 (Shivalik) class frigates.
  • The design, crafted by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai, stresses on modern stealth, survivability, and automation.
  • It features a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion plant, which uses a diesel engine and a gas turbine to drive a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) on each shaft.
  • The vessel has a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) to streamline its complex operations.
  • While at the cutting edge of technology, it honours a distinguished legacy and considered a “reincarnation" of the erstwhile INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served the naval fleet with distinction for 33 years from 1980 until its decommissioning in 2013.

The Taragiri is the fourth Project 17A ship delivered in the last 11 months, with the remaining three vessels in the class expected to be delivered progressively by August. Its construction process was notably faster than that of earlier models and, by employing the philosophy of “integrated construction", the build period was compressed to only 81 months. This is a significant improvement compared to the 93 months required for the Nilgiri, the first ship of the class.

According to an official statement about the ship’s delivery, the project reflects the navy’s “unrelenting focus" on indigenous shipbuilding moving away from foreign reliance. It is a prime example of domestic manufacturing, featuring an impressive indigenisation content of approximately 75 percent.

Its construction involved more than 200 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME). It has served as a major engine for employment, generating direct work for at least 4,000 personnel and indirectly supporting over 10,000 jobs across the country.
