The clubhouse at the World Baseball Classic often brings out strong emotions. That was clear when Tarik Skubal stepped onto the mound for Team USA against Great Britain at Daikin Park in Houston.
The Detroit Tigers star was expected to make only one appearance in the tournament, but the moment quickly turned into something much bigger. After the game, teammates Bryce Harper and Paul Skenes shared emotional messages about his decision to play.Skubal delivered a solid outing despite giving up a leadoff home run to Nate Eaton on the first pitch. He settled down quickly and pitched three innings, allowing just one run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Team USA went on to win the game 9–1. Still, the biggest story after the game was not just the win. It was the respect Skubal earned from his teammates as he balances national pride with a huge contract year ahead.
Bryce Harper and Paul Skenes praise Tarik Skubal as pitcher weighs difficult decision about staying with Team USA
Paul Skenes explained why Skubal’s decision to join the team meant so much inside the clubhouse. The young ace said the tournament is about more than individual careers.Skenes said, “If this game were just about Tarik, he’s sitting in Lakeland right now watching the WBC.
But it’s not about him. It’s not about me. It’s not about any of us. It’s a whole lot bigger than us. I’m glad he answered the call.”Bryce Harper also spoke with deep respect about the situation. The Phillies first baseman pointed out that Skubal is risking a huge future payday just by stepping on the field.Harper said, “For Skubes to come out here and do what he does and pitch us one game, I have the most respect for pitchers who come in and do it, because everybody knows he is going to get absolutely broken off next year, and he’s going to make more money than anybody as a starting pitcher.
For him to be able to do that and do it for us is something I respect out of him.”The risk Harper mentioned is real. Skubal is entering the final year of arbitration with the Detroit Tigers. If he stays healthy this season, many around baseball believe he could land one of the biggest contracts ever given to a pitcher. Still, the experience of playing for Team USA has clearly made an impact on him. After the game, Skubal admitted that leaving the tournament will not be an easy decision.
He said, “Team USA totally gets what is going on with my situation. It’s unique. I’ve had these discussions with people, and most of them are extremely supportive of me being here in the first place.”He also added, “I want to play, but there’s a lot of stuff that factors in for this type of decision.” According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Skubal discussed the situation with Tigers management and his agent, Scott Boras, after the game. For now, the original plan still stands. Skubal was expected to make just one appearance before returning to Detroit’s spring training camp in Lakeland. But after experiencing the energy of the World Baseball Classic, walking away from the team may be harder than he first expected.
