The diamond, design and the jaw-dropping price everyone's talking about

“I like shiny things, but I’d marry you with paper rings,” proclaimed Taylor Swift once in a song, but let us clear something first, this was no paper ring at all. It’s official: an American royal wedding is coming. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged.

The pop superstar and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end shared the news in a joint Instagram post today, joking, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.

For the flower-filled celebration, Swift wore a black-and-white pinstripe Ralph Lauren halter dress, paired with tan sandal heels, gold accessories, and a nude manicure topped with her signature coral-red lip. But all eyes were drawn to her engagement ring—an antique-inspired sparkler that fans and jewelry experts agree feels quintessentially Taylor.

A vintage nod: The diamond and the setting

As reported by Vogue, Kelce proposed with a “round brilliant-cut old mine diamond bezel-set in gold.” The custom design came from Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry, who confirmed to Vogue that Kelce worked with her directly on the piece. The band features delicate filigree detailing, giving the ring a timeless, handcrafted finish.

This particular style, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, is prized for its antique character.

Fine jewelry brand VRAI, told Forbes: “Old Mine Cut diamonds are square shaped with rounded corners and have 58 facets. However, no two Old Mine Cut diamonds are alike. You can recognize one by its small table, larger culet and high crown.”

The size and rarity of the stone have naturally sparked speculation about its value. Jewelry expert Benjamin Khordipour told Brides that Swift “was proposed to with a stunning elongated antique cushion-cut diamond that is approximately eight carats, F color, and VS1 clarity.

The ring was handcrafted in 18k yellow gold and the center diamond is set with needle point prongs that perfectly match the antique style. Smaller diamonds and hand-engravings adorn the shoulders of her setting.

Khordipour estimated the value at “$550,000.” But another expert cited by Glamour placed the ring’s worth significantly higher: “a cool $750,000 to $1,000,000.”The custom design also reflects Artifex Fine Jewelry’s reputation for luxe, artisanal creations. Their Deametra ring alone retails for upwards of $33,600, according to Glamour.
