TDP MP Putta Mahesh Yadav Urges Police Leniency for Drunk Drivers

Vijayawada: TDP MP from Eluru, Putta Mahesh Yadav, made an unusual request to the police to be lenient with drunk drivers. Speaking at the recent Disha coordination meeting, Mahesh complained that the police are indiscriminately issuing challans in the enforcement drives being conducted across Eluru district, including in rural areas.Mahesh further said that he was getting numerous calls from people caught by the police for drunk driving. He requested the superintendent of police, K Pratap Siva Kishore, to do something about it as these are becoming political issues in the villages.Responding to the unusual request from the MP, Kishore tried to explain that a large number of accidents, including some serious ones, are taking place because of drunk driving.

He said that the police will also take up awareness drives along with the enforcement.Mahesh went on to say that the stringent measures being taken by the police are creating a negative impression on the govt as the people who were caught by the police are approaching either the local leaders or calling him. He requested the district SP to be lenient in non-serious cases even if it is a drunk driving case. He asked the SP to instruct SHOs concerned to take local mandal party presidents into confidence and let off those non-serious drunk drivers recommended by the mandal party presidents.

The officials observed that police will continue to do their duty without getting influenced by such requests.
