Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan launched a scathing attack against the Shehbaz Sharif-led government, accusing it of employing “technical games" and bureaucratic silence to prevent her brother’s sons from visiting him in prison.
Describing the action of the authorities as a deliberate obstruction of fundamental rights, Aleema Khan raised grave concerns over the Pakistan government’s transparency and the physical well-being of Imran Khan.
Bringing up the issue of visa applications for Imran’s sons, Aleema claimed her brother’s sons had timely submitted their visa applications on their local passports as early as January 15. She said despite the fact that such visas are usually processed within an hour, the government has failed to provide any formal response.
She said officials have instead raised hurdles regarding the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP).
“Why is the government insisting on NICOP for Imran Khan’s sons to travel?" Aleema asked, adding that their original cards were lost and that the responsibility for reissuing such documentation lies with the state. “They don’t even refuse to issue visas to Imran Khan’s sons; they simply don’t respond."
Beyond this, she expressed alarm over the conditions of Imran’s incarceration. She alleged that the family is being kept “in the dark" regarding his status, with personal physicians routinely denied access to him.
Aleema alleged that the most distressing part about this is that Imran is being moved between locations without prior notification to the family.
“By keeping us in the dark and keeping his personal physicians away, we have no idea what kind of ‘treatment’ they are providing," she said.
She alleged that this lack of transparency extends to his wife, Bushra Bibi, who is also in detention. She dismissed the government’s claims that they are keeping her informed about her husband’s health, adding that meetings with her have been banned for a fortnight.
“Who knows what they are telling her? …now even second or third-hand information is no longer reaching us," she claimed.
Aleema further accused ministers of being untruthful and indifferent to the public will, stressing that they “completely destroyed all moral values" because they did not come to power through genuine popular support. She alleged that the current administration is undermining democratic values and transparency in a way that has caused politics in the country to lose all credibility.
Addressing speculation about her own motives, she said her public advocacy is not a pursuit of political office.
“Why do you think we will step forward for politics? We are not doing politics. We are simply standing up for our brother, Imran Khan," she said, adding that her stance was necessary to defend her brother’s safety and fundamental rights.
She, however, offered a parting warning to the establishment saying “traditional politics will no longer work in Pakistan" and that a political future only belongs to those who truly stand with the people.
