PGI is an evidence-based assessment system for school education across the country, to identify specific interventions required to make transformational changes in school education in the light of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommendations and Sustainable Development Goals, as per the report. It helps State governments identify key strengths, gaps, and priority areas requiring targeted policy attention. The index was introduced in 2017.
The assessment sources its data from across 70 indicators in categories of Outcomes and Governance and Management. The maximum weightage, out of 1000, is for equity (260), learning outcomes and quality (240), and infrastructure (190).
While Chandigarh is the top performer, followed by States of Delhi, Kerala, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Odisha, Telangana shares the same band score with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
