There is tension as some miscreants set on fire a portion of a mausoleum belonging to the Shia Muslims and vandalised the structure under the limits of the Maudarwaja police station in Fatehgarh on Thursday (February 12, 2026). Police are maintaining a strict vigil in the area, amid anger of local residents. It has been alleged that some anti-social elements vandalised the portion and set on fire the old mausoleum. District police officials, along with the local Station House Officer, reached the site and pacified the locals, promising strict action over the incident.
“A case has been registered. We have formed three special teams to crack the case and check CCTV footages. Electronic evidence are being scrutinised to nab culprits. A Special Operation Group [SOG] team is also looking into the matter. Suspects are being questioned. In the preliminary stage, it seems anti-social elements have done this act,” said Arti Singh, Superintendent of Police, Fatehgarh, in a video statement.
‘Bid to create communal division’
Samajwadi Party MP from Ghazipur, Afzal Ansari, alleged a systematic design to create communal division in Uttar Pradesh and demanded the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of the issue, which impacted communal harmony. “Organised pattern is at play across Uttar Pradesh to disturb communal harmony and terrorise minorities. This incident of setting on fire a mausoleum is the latest of many such incidents. The fact is elements in the ruling BJP and the RSS embolden such anti-social elements, when the Chief Minister himself makes a communal statement and asks the majority community youths to teach a lesson to Muslims. I condemn the incident in strongest words,” said Mr. Ansari.
The Congress said that by damaging such a structure, the environment and symbol of harmony were destroyed, creating a broader religious division. “Elements backed by the ruling ecosystem are working full time to destroy symbols of harmony, where even Hindus go for prayers. They aim to create a broader division on the lines of religion, and the Fatehgarh incident is an example of that grand design,” said Shahnawaz Alam, Congress national secretary.
