Tension prevailed in Kakinada city while the police reportedly attempted to prevent locals from erecting the statue of Kapu leader Vangaveeti Ranga at the newly commissioned flyover on Saturday (September 06).

Some residents in the locality reportedly brought a statue of Vangaveeti Ranga to be erected at the flyover entry junction while the Rotary Club (Kakinada Chapter) was constructing a footpath with some stairs to erect a plaque of its official symbol to promote its services.  On being alerted about the move to erect Mr. Ranga’s statue, the local police rushed to the spot in the early hours of Saturday.

Kakinada Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhawna told The Hindu: “We had talks with the locals on the issue and settled it. They have withdrawn their attempt to erect the statue of Mr. Ranga on being advised to obtain permission from the Municipal Council.”

Ms. Bhawna has also assured that neither of these two groups will be allowed to erect anything at the designated location until further orders. The Municipal authorities have recovered Mr. Ranga’s statue and demolished the footpath and the stairs.
