Maharashtra Navnirman Sena members, who allegedly thrashed a food stall owner in Thane for not speaking in Marathi, were arrested and were granted bail within hours, NDTV quotes sources.
The report also claimed Maharashtra minister Nitish Rane confirmed the arrest of MNS workers in a brief interview.
Quoting police sources, the report mentioned that seven members of the MNS had been detained, but were released on bail bonds, since the charges against them hold a maximum punishment of seven years.
One of those accused was also quoted as saying that he, along with others, were allowed to leave as the registered offence is a non-cognisable one.
WHAT WAS THE CASE
A food stall owner in Thane district was beaten up allegedly by activists of a regional political party for not speaking in Marathi, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday in the Bhayander area of the city.
A video of the incident, widely shared on social media, showed some of the attackers wearing scarves having the symbol of the Raj Thackeray-led MNS.
While purchasing food, one of them asked the stall owner to speak in Marathi, to which he questioned them back.
This annoyed the man, who shouted at the stall owner. Some others who were with the man joined him and slapped the stall owner, a police official told news agency PTI.
Based on the stall owner’s complaint, the Kashimira Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified persons under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and a probe was on into the case.
Members of the MNS have been trying to push for the use of the Marathi language in commercial establishments and banks in the state.
