Lamine Yamal dismissed any suggestion that he would be intimidated by France ahead of Spain’s World Cup semi-final, speaking confidently on Monday as he celebrated his 19th birthday.

The Barcelona starlet had sparked discussion after Spain’s 2-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium last week when he was quoted as saying France, not Spain, should be “afraid" because of Les Bleus’ recent losses to La Roja.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Yamal clarified the remarks with a relaxed demeanor.

“I was asked if I was afraid of France, and I said no," Yamal explained. “We are European champions. It’s simply football," the teenager explained.

The winger revealed he had celebrated turning 19 by treating himself to a chunky, jewel-encrusted necklace, which he wore to the media event. However, he said the present he wants most is helping Spain reach Sunday’s World Cup final.

“I haven’t received many gifts yet. The best gift would be a win on Tuesday and a trip to New York," he said.

Although several players have lit up the tournament with prolific scoring displays, Yamal has scored just once so far at this World Cup. Even so, he hopes to increase that tally in the showdown with France.

“I don’t focus on goals, but it’s always special to score in a match like this. I accept the challenge. That’s why I came here," Yamal said, promising a “beautiful match for the spectators."

“It’s the game everyone was waiting for," he added.

Despite the significance of Tuesday’s semi-final, Yamal said he is approaching the occasion with the same composure he brings to every match.

“There are far more difficult situations in life than a football match, so I’m calm," he said. “I don’t feel any extra pressure; I’ll go out and play like always and give my all for the team."
