The Carolina Hurricanes expect to sign former Devils forward Michael McLeod this NHL season

In the NHL, training camps have already started for the teams, along with them, organizations have begun signing contract deals with players and free agents as well. The Carolina Hurricanes are expected to sign former New Jersey Devils forward Michael McLeod at some point this season.

It is to be noted that McLeod, 27, was one of five members of the 2018 Hockey Canada team charged with sexual assault in January of 2024, alongside Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton, and Carter Hart. However, it was reported that all five players were found not guilty in July following a two-month trial in London, Ontario. According to ESPN, Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, and Alex Formenton are eligible to sign on October 15 and play on December 1 as part of their reinstatement process.

NHL’s Michael McLeod is expected to join the Carolina Hurricanes. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Carolina Hurricanes are expected to sign former New Jersey Devils forward Michael McLeod at some point this season. Taking to his Twitter, Pagnotta stated, “Per sources, there is an expectation free agent forward Michael McLeod will be joining the Hurricanes this season.

Carolina also checked on Carter Hart, as I and others have previously reported.” Though it has not been confirmed yet, there’s a possibility that McLeod will join the Hurricanes soon this season.

It is to be noted that McLeod was one of the five members of Canada's 2018 World Junior Team, who were acquitted of sexual assault, and are not yet allowed to sign or play in the NHL. But, as per ESPN, “Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, and Alex Formenton are eligible to sign Oct.

15 and play Dec. 1 as part of their reinstatement process. A judge in London, Ontario, in a ruling handed down in late July, acquitted them of charges stemming from an incident there seven years earlier.

Michael McLeod’s journey in the NHL so far

As per the NHL, Michael McLeod was selected by the Devils with the No. 12 pick at the 2016 NHL Draft after he scored 61 points (21 goals, 40 assists) in 57 games for Mississauga of the Ontario Hockey League. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Devils on October 7, 2016, and later he signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Devils on July 1, 2023.
