'The Conjuring' Universe is preparing for its final chapter with 'The Conjuring: Last Rites', and director James Wan is calling the farewell both emotional and fitting. The ninth instalment in the $2 billion global franchise reunites lead stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. This time around, the two face their most personal case yet when their daughter Judy (played by Mia Tomlinson) and her boyfriend (Ben Hardy) are drawn into the supernatural horror.
Conjuring: Last Rites to mark the end of an era
Speaking about closing out the franchise, Wan reflected on the decade-long journey that made 'The Conjuring' one of the most successful horror sagas in cinema history. “For me, 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' is pretty much the end of an era and, because of that, it’s somewhat bittersweet," said Wan in a statement. He went on to add, "We’ve had such a good time making these films, because it feels like such a family unit—between Vera and Patrick, working with New Line, the cast and crew.
I felt a little bit wistful that we’re coming to an end. But like all good things… I think we’re finishing up at the right time. It feels like this movie is a good way to wrap up the world, at least for now."
Wan on Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson's bond with the fans
Looking back at the franchise and the bond it has created with the film's cast and crew, he said, "It’s been over a decade with the Conjuring Universe. Vera and Patrick have always been the centre of these movies. They have such a great relationship, onscreen and off—they’re such good friends.
I think that really comes across and the audience sees how authentic it is. I think it brings much more reality to the characters that they play.
It’s a big part of why fans out there love these films. I have always said, ‘They come for the fright and the scares, but they really stick around for Vera and Patrick.’”'The Conjuring: Last Rites' will release in India on September 5, 2025, exclusively in theatres and IMAX.
