Jesse Tyler Ferguson, famously known as Mitchell Pritchett, one of the titular characters in 'The Modern Family', recently opened up about his experience of working on the show. He delved into the kind of challenges he had to face while playing the gay character, and even shared how he felt a sense of “responsibility” to become an accurate representation of the LGBTQIA+ community on the popular show.

The actor, who plays one of the main characters on the show, would often feel that he had to “get it right” and portray his role as a gay lawyer as accurately and authentically as possible. In an episode of the podcast 'Dinner’s On Me', the star revealed the kind of challenges he had to face while on the show.The actor shared, “I felt a responsibility from the [LGBTQ] community when I was given a role like the one I had on Modern Family to get it right and to do it with care and precision".
He even added that while the pressure was real, he was grateful to be a part of "a pop culture touchstone", especially since the show was heavily connected with his fight for marriage equality.While diving deep into his character on the show, Ferguson shared that he had to find a way to separate the expectancy from this community to 'get it right, ' as well as his nuanced way of approaching the character on the show and the layers that went into creating him.
He shares that he is in a better place now regarding his time on ‘The Modern Family’
The actor also added on about how, although at the time starring in the show presented a lot of battles, he is now in a better place altogether. He added, “I’m in a place where I’m, as an actor, being given a role where I’m attracted to the messiness of that character. I’m attracted to their flaws. Like, that’s what makes it interesting. And, honestly, that’s what makes the audience interested in watching me.”He also talked about how people are more interested in seeing the layers, the flaws of a character on screen, than anything else. In contrast to that, in the first few seasons of the show, he felt the need to be perfect as he played a role in a gay couple on a “popular sitcom”.‘The Modern Family’ is about three interconnected families that deal with everyday situations through a series of hilarious trials and errors.
