US President Donald Trump has firmly dismissed any possibility of Iran imposing tolls or restrictions on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring Washington’s stance on maintaining free navigation in the critical maritime corridor.
Responding to a reporter’s question aboard Air Force One about whether Iran could introduce tolls or controls on ships using the strait, Trump gave an unequivocal rejection. “Nope. No way.." With his remark, the Republican leader made it clear that such measures would not be accepted by the US. Follow for live updates
Pressed further on the issue, Trump reiterated that both restrictions and tolls were off the table. “No, there’s not gonna be tolls," he said, adding, “The restriction is you can’t do the tolls."
His comments come amid heightened global focus on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas supply passes. Any attempt to regulate or monetise access to the strait by Iran has long been viewed as a potential flashpoint, with implications for global energy markets and maritime security.
The exchange, captured on video and shared on X by the White House Rapid Response account, highlights the administration’s firm position against any changes to the framework that usually governs passage through the waterway.
Trump’s comments also align with broader US efforts to ensure that the waterway remains open and accessible to international shipping, particularly at a time of ongoing tensions in the region.
