Speaking alongside Egyptian President Sisi at the summit in Evian, Trump said the Obama administration had “tried to bribe” Iran through the nuclear accord.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday revived his criticism of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and targeted former President Barack Obama, while making a series of claims about the terms of the deal during a joint press briefing at the G7 summit in France.

Speaking alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the summit in Evian, Trump said the Obama administration had “tried to bribe" Iran through the nuclear accord and alleged that large sums of cash were transferred as part of the agreement.

He has repeatedly referred to the 2015 deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as poorly structured and unfair to the United States.

“Nobody could have made this deal. I mean the JCPOA done by Obama. He handed him a billion seven in cash… 1.7 billion dollars in cash, green cash from banks into a Boeing 757 and flew it into Iran," Trump said, adding that Iran later reacted with ridicule.

“The Iranians laughed at Obama and they said, ‘He is a stupid son of a bitch,’" Trump said.

The JCPOA, signed between Iran and the P5+1 countries in 2015, placed limits on Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

However, the US withdrew from the agreement in 2018 under Trump’s first term, who argued that it failed to address Iran’s ballistic missile programme and regional activities. Iran later scaled back its compliance and expanded uranium enrichment after sanctions were reimposed.
