Rob Gronkowski and Camille Kostek built their relationship quietly long before fans saw them as one of the NFL’s most beloved couples. Today their story feels public and easy, but in the early days it unfolded in near silence, shaped by strict rules and a bit of patience. The two first crossed paths in 2013 during a Goodwill charity event while Gronkowski was starring for the New England Patriots and Kostek was working on the sidelines as one of the team’s cheerleaders. Sparks came quickly, yet the circumstances around them demanded caution. What looked like a simple meeting soon turned into a relationship that had to stay hidden for quite some time.

Why Rob Gronkowski and Camille Kostek kept their relationship secret early on

For a while, Rob Gronkowski and Camille Kostek had little choice but to keep things private.

The reason had less to do with celebrity attention and more with league policy.During a recent appearance on a podcast hosted by Logan Paul, professional wrestler and former cheerleader Maxxine Dupri explained the reality behind the rule. Cheerleaders working for professional teams often sign contracts that prohibit them from forming relationships with players. Breaking that rule could cost them their position.

“They kept it a secret while she was a cheerleader…If someone found out, you’d be off the team.”

Dupri knows the environment well. Before entering wrestling, she cheered for both the Los Angeles Rams and the Phoenix Suns. According to her, the NBA environment felt a bit more relaxed compared to the NFL, where policies around player interactions were taken more seriously.Kostek herself has shared how awkward and uncertain those first moments were.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s “This Is Happening with Mark Zito and Ryan Sampson,” she remembered how the connection actually began. One of Gronkowski’s teammates quietly handed her his number.“I was a rookie. I was like, ‘Oh no, no, no, I can’t take this. I can’t take his number.’ And then [his teammate] was like, ‘Just take it,’ and I was like, ‘Okay,’ and I put it in my pocket. And I never spoke about it again,” she said.Eventually the two connected through FaceTime. The chemistry was clear, but the secrecy remained. Kostek kept the relationship away from teammates and friends within the cheerleading squad. The circle of people who knew was extremely small. It stayed that way until September 2015, when the couple finally made their relationship public.Looking back, Gronkowski still remembers the exact moment their story started.

Speaking with PEOPLE, the Super Bowl champion reflected on that charity event that quietly changed his life.“Camille and I met during Thanksgiving week. Therefore, I am very thankful for the charity event we met at,” he said. That moment, simple and unplanned, ended up shaping a relationship that has now lasted more than a decade.Even after going public, their origin story still carries a certain charm. What began as a secret exchange of a phone number grew into one of football’s most enduring partnerships, built not on headlines but on patience and timing.
