US President Donald Trump on Monday sued the BBC for defamation, accusing the British broadcaster of airing edited clips of a speech in a way that made it appear he directed his supporters to storm the US Capitol on January 6.

January 6, 2021, refers to the day a pro-Trump mob breached the US Capitol in Washington as Congress met to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. The attack forced lawmakers into hiding, left several people dead and injured, disrupted the constitutional transfer of power and is widely regarded as one of the most serious assaults on US democratic institutions in modern history.

Trump alleged that the BBC defamed him by selectively splicing together parts of a speech he delivered on January 6, 2021, hours before the Capitol attack. According to the lawsuit, the broadcaster edited two portions of the address — one in which Trump urged supporters to march to the Capitol and another where he said “fight like hell" and omitted a segment in which he called for peaceful protest.

Trump’s lawsuit alleges that the BBC defamed him and violated a Florida law prohibiting deceptive and unfair trade practices. He is seeking $5 billion in damages on each of the suit’s two counts.
