It’s not every day a football legend gets a street named after him in New York.
But that’s exactly what happened to Thierry Henry ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the French icon receiving a special tribute in the heart of Manhattan.
The former Arsenal and Barcelona star was honoured with a temporary street renaming ceremony on the corner of West 50th Street and Sixth Avenue, where city officials unveiled a sign officially marking the intersection as “Thierry Henry Way."
Henry Misses Ceremony, But Still Makes An Appearance
While the 48-year-old was unable to attend the event in person, he still found a way to be part of the celebrations.
Henry joined the unveiling via FaceTime, appearing virtually during the ceremony as city officials, guests and former teammates gathered to mark the occasion.
The former striker’s absence was due to his broadcasting commitments at the World Cup, where he is serving as FOX Sports’ lead studio analyst throughout the tournament.
A Fitting Tribute
A member of France’s 1998 World Cup-winning squad, Henry went on to become one of the greatest forwards of his generation during trophy-laden spells with Arsenal and FC Barcelona.
But his connection with New York is equally significant. Henry spent five seasons with New York Red Bulls after arriving in MLS in 2010, helping raise the profile of football in the city and becoming one of the league’s biggest stars.
The tribute comes as New York prepares to play a major role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Former Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips was among those present for the unveiling, alongside city council members and local officials.
The “Thierry Henry Way" sign will remain in place throughout the tournament before expiring on November 1.
