It’s not every day that thieves repeatedly target an individual. It is even rarer when the person is a sitting MLA.

The Congress MLA from Dausa, Deen Dayal Bairwa, first had his phone stolen on June 11 at a public programme, then a motorcycle was stolen from his Dausa residence, and now, a tractor trolley has been stolen overnight from his home, he said Monday.

Bairwa was allegedly deprived of his mobile phone at a prayer meeting in Dausa to mark the 25th death anniversary of the late Rajesh Pilot, the former union minister and Sachin Pilot’s father.

Talking to The Indian Express, Bairwa said, “It is a big deal that the thieves are committing theft in this manner at an MLA’s house. It raises questions about the police and breaks trust in them. How can you protect the common man if this is happening with an MLA?”

He said that when the motorcycle was stolen, the front camera of his residence wasn’t working, and the other camera couldn’t capture the view. And last night, the camera had been removed to allow construction work there. “But even a camera cannot stop them because the thieves can simply cover their faces,” he said.

Festive offer

“This is unheard of; not even a nail had been stolen from me before this. And now these three back-to-back thefts have occurred. Police should investigate who is behind these,” he said.

Dausa Superintendent of Police Sagar said, “As of now, we haven’t received any complaint for the theft of a tractor-trolley. As for the mobile phone, he had lodged a complaint, and there is an FIR for the bike theft.”

The Congress has cited the thefts to question law and order in Rajasthan. Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully said, “Even MLAs are not safe … the state’s law and order situation has become so dire.”

“Thieves, dacoits, and mafias are fearless, and the police administration remains silent,” he said, pointing out that the Home Department comes under CM Bhajan Lal Sharma himself.

A first-time MLA, Bairwa was elected from Dausa in a bypoll in November last year. The seat had fallen vacant after sitting Congress MLA Murari Lal Meena was elected to the Lok Sabha last year.
