Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V.V. Rajesh on Thursday visited the Corporation-run modernised slaughterhouse at Kunnukuzhy, where final preparations are under way for its commissioning within the next few days.

During the inspection, the Mayor reviewed the upgraded facilities, sanitation measures and the scientific waste management system installed at the abattoir.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mr. Rajesh said the slaughterhouse has been equipped with the latest available technology to ensure scientifically processed and hygienically prepared meat for the public.

He added that machinery and related systems worth nearly ₹10 crore have been installed at the facility, while the final project cost will be known only after the completion bill is received. The slaughterhouse has been designed with strict quality control measures.

A dedicated team of two veterinary doctors will examine animals brought to the facility before slaughter. Animals found to be diseased or pregnant will be rejected. Cut meat will also undergo further inspection to detect diseases, and contaminated meat will not be cleared for distribution.

The upgraded unit is expected to ensure faster processing and distribution of meat products while maintaining high hygiene standards.

Capacity

The plant has been designed to handle 75 large animals and 50 small animals per day. It will also have a capacity to hold 75 livestock. Solid waste will be treated at site using a biogas plant. The byproduct from the effluent treatment plant will be supplied to industries involved in the manufacture of animal food. The plant is equipped with cold storage facilities.

The Mayor also said the commissioning of the modernised slaughterhouse would help the Corporation take action against unauthorised slaughterhouses operating in the city.

“With the facility becoming fully operational, we will be able to shut down illegal abattoirs functioning in the city. This will help end the dumping of slaughter waste on roads, and the discharge of blood and waste into rivers and other water bodies,” he said.

He added that unscientific disposal of waste from illegal slaughterhouses has contributed to pollution and has also aggravated the stray dog menace in the city. The new facility would provide a long-term solution to such issues and strengthen the Corporation’s efforts to maintain urban cleanliness, he said.
