In an exclusive on JioHotstar’s ‘Premier League Originals’, Merino and Zubimendi touched up on a variety of topics including the Gunner's aspirations and the atmosphere at the club

Arsenal midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino.
Premier League leaders Arsenal look to get their hands on the coveted English top-flight title after decades of anxious wait as Mikel Arteta’s Gunners stand atop the table with 14 games left to play. Arsenal have a six-point advantage over chasing Man City, and the London-based unit look to secure the title and deliver joy to the millions of faithful across the globe.
Speaking exclusively on JioHotstar’s show ‘Premier League Originals’, Merino opened up on why he remained rather neutral when compatriot and teammate Zubimendi asked him about a potential move to London before he put pen to paper.
“I deliberately avoided getting too involved; it’s a deeply personal career choice. Moments like switching clubs, especially to a club as meaningful as Arsenal for him, belong to the individual," Merino said.
“Of course, selfishly, I’m thrilled he’s with us now and I get to enjoy playing alongside him on and off the pitch. But back then, it was his call to make, and he made it," he added.
The Spaniard also touched up on the Gunner’s excellent defensive record that has helped them say atop the table in the ongoing campaign.
“We put in tremendous effort across the board, not only set-pieces as many assume, but every aspect. You see it in our pressing, how everyone dives into blocks, covers shots, or intercepts passes,"
“Defence wins trophies, so I hope we keep this up," the 29-year-old continued.
Arsenal, who have missed out on the title in excruciating fashion for two years on the bounce after capitulating early leads to Manchester City and Liverpool in the season prior.
“After so long without the silverware, this group refuses to give up, unlike others who might think the chance has passed after four straight years of falling short."
“The originals who’ve been here from day one, are more driven than ever, while us newcomers arrive striving to contribute and slot right into the rhythm."
“I hope it’s our year, but plenty remains, and winning in the Premier League or Champions League is brutally tough. One thing’s certain: desire and effort won’t be lacking," he asserted.
Zubimendi also revealed the atmosphere at the club and the mentality head coach Mikel Arteta has instilled in the unit as the Gunners go in search of a two-decade drought ending title.
“It’s been years since Arsenal were this close to their goal, and rather than pressure, it’s become pure motivation for what’s ahead. I see the team hungrier than ever, and coach Mikel Arteta, who’s been with us for years, even more driven," Zubimendi added.
