This hero dog refused to leave a frozen creek: What his family discovered moments later left them completely frozen in shock and tears

A routine winter walk through the woods turned into an unexpected animal rescue for an Alberta family after one of their dogs refused to continue along the trail. Jason and Kris Zackowski had set out near their farm in Canada with their two Bernese mountain dogs, Bunsen and Beaker, expecting nothing more than a peaceful stroll through the snow.

Jason happened to be recording the outing, capturing what first appeared to be ordinary behaviour from his dogs. It was only after Bunsen repeatedly ignored calls to return that the family realised something unusual was happening. His determination led them away from the path and towards a frozen creek, where they found a weak dog lying in the snow. The discovery quickly changed the focus of the afternoon, setting in motion a rescue that depended on patience, teamwork and one remarkably persistent pet.

The walk had started in familiar fashion, with both dogs happily exploring the woodland while their owners followed behind. Bunsen spent time sniffing through the snow before suddenly moving with purpose towards a nearby creek. Jason called him back several times, expecting the usually obedient dog to respond, but Bunsen stayed exactly where he was.Rather than wandering off or chasing a scent, he remained fixed on one small area beside the icy water.

His behaviour was so unlike his normal self that Jason and Kris decided to find out what had caught his attention. As they drew closer, they realised Bunsen had not been distracted at all. He had found another dog lying beside the frozen creek.The animal looked extremely weak and did not attempt to run away. According to Jason, the dog appeared unable to stand and looked as though it had been outside for a considerable period.

He believed it was either a stray or a dog that had somehow survived alone in the surrounding woodland.Jason approached slowly while speaking calmly so the frightened animal would not become more distressed. He offered some dry dog food, and the hungry dog immediately began eating every piece. The response suggested it had gone without food for some time, but eating alone was not enough to solve the problem. The dog still lacked the strength to walk out of the area.

How one family safely carried the exhausted dog to freedom

Realising they could not leave the dog behind, Jason and Kris contacted their son, Adam, and asked him to bring equipment that would allow them to transport the animal safely. Adam arrived carrying rescue supplies as well as extra treats, giving the family another way to build the dog's trust before attempting to move it.They avoided rushing the rescue. Instead, they spent time reassuring the dog until it accepted their help.

Once they were confident it could be moved without causing further distress, they wrapped it in blankets and placed it carefully inside a sled. Adam then pulled the sled through the snowy woodland, allowing the exhausted dog to leave the freezing creek without having to walk.

From survival to recovery: The dog's next chapter

Once they were safe from danger, the family focused their attention on aiding the recovery of the dog that had been saved. Arrangements were temporarily made for providing comfort and shelter for the dog.However, this incident served to show the importance of Bunsen in the whole situation. If he had obeyed when he was called back to the trail, then perhaps the stranded dog would not even have been found. It is due to his reluctance to come back from the creek that the family to take action, which led to an animal being helped.
