Venezuela was rocked by two back-to-back powerful earthquakes on Wednesday, June 24, triggering panic and causing heavy damage in the capital of Caracas. The twin tremors, among the strongest to strike the South American nation in over a century, led to loss of lives and devastation of homes, businesses and public infrastructure.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck shortly after 6 PM local time, with its epicentre off the Caribbean coast near Moron. Barely 40 seconds later, a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake struck at a shallower depth near Montalban, a region that houses some of the country’s largest oil refineries.

Visuals of the devastation caused by the powerful earthquakes have surfaced on social media, showing the extent of the damage in Caracas and other areas. A video shared on X captured the aftermath of the earthquakes in what appeared to be a residential area lined with high-rise buildings. As the camera moved along, a multi-story building was seen partially collapsed, with large sections of concrete reduced to rubble. Some people gathered outside the building.

One clip from Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía showed passengers and staff members running for their lives as parts of the infrastructure collapsed during the earthquakes. The entire airport was covered in dust.

Another video from inside a home showed the floor, furniture, and wall shaking vigorously as the back-to-back earthquakes struck the country. Several things inside the home were seen falling here and there.

“Truly Heartbreaking"

The horrifying visuals of the destruction caused by the powerful earthquakes have left people praying for the safety and well-being of people in Venezuela.

“Venezuela is facing a huge natural calamity. It is expected that more than 10k people have lost their lives in this incident. Let’s pray for their well-being," said one user.

Another person said, “The scale of a number like 100,000 is impossible to even wrap your head around. Truly heartbreaking to hear about the destruction in Venezuela."

A different individual commented, “That damage is insane. None of those buildings are structurally safe now. That, on top of any cracked underground gas lines. The 1st set of death toll numbers will just be the beginning."

Someone else remarked, “This is horrible!! Not only loss of life, loss of liveability… no water, power, refrigeration- get them help now, as quickly as possible!"

A user shared, “I’m keeping the people of Venezuela in my thoughts tonight. May those affected find strength, and may rescue teams be given every resource they need in the difficult hours ahead."
