A woman's lifelong belief that hair fall is normal was challenged by a simple salad. This nourishing dish not only combatted her frequent colds and allergies but also significantly reduced hair loss.
I grew up believing that hair fall is normal.“It happens in winters… it happens in monsoons… it happens in summers… it happens after pregnancy… it happens in adolescence…”—these were things I heard all my life. When my house help would complain about the amount of hair on the floor while cleaning, I would casually dismiss it.“It happens… my hair falls like this only,” I would say.“Didi, sir se zyada toh zameen pe baal milta hai,” she would respond—and I would just laugh it off.Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that my hair was naturally silky, and that’s why it looked thin. But there was something else too—I kept falling sick every few weeks.
Constant colds, sniffles, seasonal allergies… It became a pattern I didn’t question much. And maybe that’s what led me to try this simple salad. What I didn’t expect was this:Not only did it help with my recurring colds and allergies, but it also reduced my hair fall.Honestly, it surprised me as much as it might surprise you. I had always believed that once you cross 35, hair fall is something you just have to live with. But maybe, sometimes, your body just needs the right kind of nourishment.
It is an old salad recipe that we used to have in schooldays—we called it Shakarkandi-Anda Chaat; the only thing that I added to it was rosemary.

Ingredients:1 sprig rosemary1 amla2 tsp jaggery powder1 small sweet potato1 boiled egg (optional) / 50 g paneer2 tbsp roasted walnuts and almondsSalt and pepper to taste1 tsp olive oil1 tsp crushed garlicHow to make itBoil the sweet potato and slice it thinly. Heat olive oil in a non-stick pan and add crushed garlic.Let it release its aroma. Add the sliced sweet potatoes and cook on a low flame until they turn slightly crisp.Finely chop the rosemary and add it to the pan. Now add jaggery powder, salt, pepper, and roasted nuts. Mix everything well. Turn off the heat and squeeze in fresh amla juice. Your warm, nourishing salad is ready. Why It worksThis salad is more than just a recipe. It contains almost every ingredient that may contribute towards improved scalp health.
Amla is one of the richest sources of vitamin C (around 600 mg per 100 g), which supports immunity and hair health. Eggs/paneer and nuts provide high-quality protein—essential for hair strength and growth. Olive oil and nuts offer healthy fats that nourish the scalp.Rosemary and garlic are packed with antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and support overall wellness.
You can have this salad as a part of your meal—or even as a meal in itself.
And if making the full salad feels like too much, even a simple mix of amla and rosemary juice can help.We often accept things like hair fall as “normal” without ever questioning them. But sometimes, the answer isn’t in expensive treatments or complicated routines—it’s in simple, mindful nourishment. Because when you start taking care of your body, it quietly takes care of you.
