Thomas Tuchel has signed a new contract to remain England head coach until the end of Euro 2028, ending speculation over his future beyond this year’s World Cup.
The 52-year-old German, appointed as Gareth Southgate’s successor in October 2024, has overseen a flawless qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup in North America. England won all eight of their group matches under Tuchel, extending his unbeaten start and strengthening the FA’s belief in his leadership.
Beyond just wins and points, his playing style and the profiling of the star-studded Three Lions squad has impressed the supporters.
“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England," Tuchel said in an FA statement. “It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud."
Tuchel’s previous deal had been due to expire after the World Cup, prompting reports linking him with a potential return to club football, including speculation about a move to Manchester United following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal. By committing to England through Euro 2028, to be held in the UK and Ireland, Tuchel has effectively ruled out a post-World Cup switch to Old Trafford and elsewhere.
The FA said the new agreement provides “clarity and full focus" ahead of the global showpiece. Chief executive Mark Bullingham hailed the decision as a major boost for continuity and ambition.
“I am delighted Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the Euros in 2028," Bullingham said. “He was the right person for the job when he joined us for the World Cup campaign, and has only strengthened his reputation across the qualifiers. There is simply no better candidate available in world football."
Tuchel has previously spoken of his desire to add a “second star" to England’s shirt by winning the World Cup, the nation’s first major trophy since 1966. After near-misses in the Euro 2020 and 2024 finals under Southgate, the FA is hoping Tuchel can finally deliver long-awaited silverware.
