Shilese Jones says silence from USA Gymnastics made her recovery even harder
Before the Olympic Trials, Shilese Jones was one of the strongest contenders to make the American team. She had produced excellent performances throughout the 2024 season. She won the all-around title and uneven bars gold at the U.S. Classic. Between 2022 and 2024, she reached the podium at every major competition she entered, including multiple World Championships.
Everything changed during the Olympic Trials. Jones injured her knee while competing.
At first, she was told the damage did not appear serious. However, she immediately feared the injury was much worse after feeling her knee give way. Even though she knew something was wrong, she continued pushing because she still believed she had a chance to earn a place on the Olympic team.Later, medical tests confirmed she had torn both her ACL and meniscus. The injury forced her to withdraw from the selection process.
Looking back, Jones explained that the emotional pain became even greater because she never received the support she expected from senior officials. She said she waited for encouraging words from the leadership but those conversations never happened. Despite her disappointment, she remained with the team and continued cheering for her teammates because she believed that was the right thing to do.Her recovery became even more challenging than expected. She said the difficult journey has made her mentally stronger and taught her to appreciate every small step forward. Instead of remembering the day of her injury only with sadness, she now sees it as the beginning of a remarkable comeback story.
Every obstacle, she said, has shaped the person she is today and strengthened her determination to return.Jones is now back in training and slowly rebuilding her fitness. Her return is among the most eagerly awaited in American gymnastics. Jones hopes to follow that path soon as she continues working towards her long-awaited return to the competition floor.
